Niger’s new military junta has arrested ten former ministers and officials loyal to ex-President Mamadou Tandja, accusing the men of carrying out subversive activities.
Those arrested included the former ministers of justice and finance as well as the heads of national companies, all men being close allies with Tandja.
Tandja was overthrown in a coup in February and was replaced by a military junta led by Major Salou Djibo. Calling itself the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy, the military junta has pledged to make Niger an example of democracy.
Tandja essentially triggered his own downfall after changing Niger’s constitution to allow him to serve a third term as president. Opposition groups voiced their disapproval and shortly after the change Tandja was overthrown.
Immediately following the coup the African Union expelled Niger and demanded elections be held.
