Obama Condemns Moscow Suicide Bombings
The U.S. President Responds to Horrific Attacks
On Monday, two female suicide bombers killed at least 38 people and injured at least 65 people on crowded subway trains in Moscow. The first attack occurred shortly before 8 A.M. in a station in central Moscow. The second one came approximately 45 minutes later near Gorky Park. Russian officials have blamed the violent attacks on rebels from the Caucasan region. Russian Prime Minister Vladmir Putin said on Monday that "terrorists will be destroyed." Since the attack, the New York transit system has been placed under a heightened level of security as a precaution. In a recent statement, President Barack Obama said, "The American people stand united with the people of Russia in opposition to violent extremism and heinous terrorist attacks that demonstrate such disregard for human life, and we condemn these outrageous acts." The statement was issued during Obama's surprise visit to Afghanistan on Sunday, from which he returned on Monday. Some have criticized Obama for being too lax on terrorism since he entered the White House last January. But it certainly seems that the President has no tolerance for such acts of terrorism, whether they occur in the United States or elsewhere. In a message of sympathy to the attacked nation, Obama said, "I send my deepest condolences to the people of Russia after the terrible loss of life and injuries resulting from the bombings on the Moscow metro."
