Oprah Winfrey has announced her support for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. The talk show host will hit the campaign trail in Iowa in hopes that her support will boost Obama over his rival Hillary Clinton.
Winfrey’s announcement sparked interest in the long standing question of whether celebrity endorsement really pulls in votes. Some would tend to say no as such endorsements have rarely accomplished the feat in the past.
Winfrey’s support is certain to bring in more media coverage and possibly attract more attention to the campaign, but will she be able to influence votes? She is rated the second most influential woman in the United States with Hillary Clinton taking first place. Winfrey also had a hand in raising $3 million for Obama in September.
Obama doesn’t seem to think Winfrey’s support will draw voters to him and away from the Clinton camp. The senator believes it will be left completely up to him. “People are going to make the decision not based on who’s endorsing,” Obama said. “Ultimately, I’m going to have to make the sale.”
Besides Iowa, Winfrey will follow Obama to other states including New Hampshire and South Carolina.
