NCAA College Basketball News: John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins Head Up AP First-Team All-America Squad

The Kentucky Wildcats fell short of capturing a national championship but they did accomplish something quite rare, they landed a pair of freshman on the AP First-Team All-America squad. Both John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins earned the honor on Monday, joining Ohio State’s Evan Turner, Syracuse’s Wes Johnson and Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds.

Turner was the top vote-getter among balloters as the 6-7 junior averaged 20.3 points per game and grabbed an average of 9.2 rebounds while leading the Buckeyes to the Sweet 16.

John Wall grabbed the second most votes, appearing on 62 of the ballots after averaging 16.9 points and 6.4 assists per game. Wall guided the Kentucky Wildcats to an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The Big East was represented by Syracuse’s Wes Johnson as the junior averaged an impressive 16.0 points per game and 8.4 assists. The 6-7 junior collected 45 and votes helped the Orange reach the Sweet 16.

Also coming out of the Big East was Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds who capped his senior season with an average of 18.5 points per game and 3.3 assists. Reynolds grabbed 32 spots to receive the All-America honors.

Wall’s teammate, DeMarcus Cousins, rounded out the first-team All-America after averaging 15.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.

Wall and Cousins became the first freshman tandem to earn All-America status from the same team since Duke had J.J. Redick and Sheldin Williams on annual squad in 2006.
