South Korean Warship May Have Hit North Korean Mine

Friday’s massive explosion that split a South Korean warship in half and caused the vessel to sink may have struck a North Korean mine that had been laid during the Korean War more than fifty years ago.

While investigators have not yet concluded what sank the 1,200-ton Cheonan and left 46 South Korean sailors still missing there have been numerous reports that have suggested there was no direct attack from North Korea, rather an old mine struck the ship.

As many as 4,000 mines were placed by North Korea between 1950 and 1953 and while many have since been retrieved there is a strong likelihood that several remain at sea.

Rescue crews are still searching for the missing sailors who are believed to be trapped in the sunken ship near the Northern Limit Line.

Reports have indicated 58 crew members were pulled to safety.
