Entering a “Sober Living” Treatment Program

A drug treatment program that allows a person to remain even after the initial drug rehab program has been totally completed is sometimes referred to as a “sober living” program. The purpose of such a program is to provide a drug-free or alcohol-free environment for a little while longer in order to prevent immediate relapse.

A treatment program like this requires that a facility have sufficient room to accommodate patients who are undergoing the inpatient phase of a drug treatment program as well as those who require a longer stay in residential surroundings. This is especially important, because it must be remembered that the residents are in different phases of treatment.

Those who are just beginning a drug rehab program may still be suffering withdrawal symptoms or have just ended a detoxification process. These people are going to need a different sort of attention that those who have completed a treatment program.

Those who have completed a drug treatment program but are still in the residential facilities in order to take advantage of the “sober living” environment are in a different stage all together. In fact, they can actually be considered as being in a transition phase.

How long a person can remain in a residential facility after a treatment program has been completed will vary between facilities. Some may have no time limit, especially if a person has nowhere else to go, and to leave would mean literally having no roof over one’s head. Other facilities may offer the facility for a specified period of time, during which the patient must seek employment and possibly continue attending counseling sessions or support group meetings on a regular basis.
