“It Can’t Happen to Me” May Change to “It Happened to Me, Now What Can I Do?”

Many people feel that drug addiction is just something that can’t and will never happen to them. Some may (erroneously) have that feeling because of their socio-economic status. They simply believe that drug addiction only happens to “poor” people or to people who live in “the bad part of town”.

When drug addiction does happen to a person or a person’s loved ones who do not fit the mold that is believed to be necessary for it to occur, thought processes must undergo a rapid, major adjustment. “It can’t happen to me” becomes, “It happened to me.” Hopefully, the next thought is, “Now, where do we go for help?”

The answer to the third question is easy: through a drug addiction recovery program. By entering an addiction recovery program, people from all walks of life can receive the help they need.

By the time one realizes that a drug rehab program is needed, hopefully all other thoughts of whether or not it could happen to someone of their ilk have disappeared. That’s because when addiction recovery begins, no amount of money or prestige is going to make the process any easier.

Withdrawal symptoms and the detoxification process will not be any different just because a person considers (or did consider) their station in life to be higher than that of someone else. The human body does not recognize any that, it only knows that it is being deprived of something it had grown dependent on.

A good drug addiction recovery program, however, will address the needs of everyone in the program, no matter what their socio-economic status is. No one in a drug rehab program will or should be treated with any less dignity as anyone else.
