The Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting coverage begins at Wednesday night at 7 p.m. on NBC. The tree will be lit at 8:58 p.m.
Several celebrities and musical guests will be part of the ceremony, including Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood and Ashley Tisdale.
For the first time, energy-saving bulbs are gracing the Rockefeller Center tree. The 84-foot-tall Norway spruce has been covered with 30,000 light emitting diodes (LEDs). The new lights use less than 40 percent as much electricity as the old display. Every day, they'll save enough energy to power a 2,000-square-foot home for an entire month. After the lighting ceremony, the tree will be illuminated from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. through the first week of January.
Once the tree is taken down, it will be milled into lumber for use by the housing charity Homes for Humanity.
