Department Store bomb kills 16, injures 20

A bomb exploded near a Nugegoda department store on Wednesday killing 16 people and injuring more than 20 others. Sri Lanka military says Tamil Tiger rebel group is responsible for the explosive.

The bomb attack occurred during rush hour Wednesday evening after a female suicide bomber attempted to kill a government official at his office on Colombo earlier in the day. Douglas Devananda was the target of the suicide bombing, but escaped unhurt.

Police and firefighters searched what was left of popular No Limits store for victims. Military officials believe the bomb may have been triggered when a security guard attempted to open a suspicious package.
