Demand has exceeded supply for the new energy-efficient LED Christmas lights. The Coloradoan recently reported that many of the local retail stores are entirely out of stock and do not expect any additional shipments. The shortage in supply is largely due to retailers’ underestimation of the demand for LED Christmas lights.
“Energy costs have been increasing steadily for the past few years so I think any product that offers substantial energy savings is very attractive to consumers,” explained Philip C. Curtis, co-owner of HolidayLEDs.com. LED Christmas lights have been available in retail stores for about 3 years now but this year they are more widely available. Even though more stores are offering the energy-efficient holiday lights many factors, including a fast growing “green” movement, has ignited demand for the product.
“I think a lot of people are just learning about LED lighting and did not know it was an option,” added Curtis whose e-commerce company stocked up on the popular lights in anticipation of the demand. “Quite honestly, we hoped that the demand would be this strong but no one can really predict consumer demand—we are glad we have ample supply to meet our customers’ needs,” Curtis concluded.
LED Christmas lights are 85-99% more efficient than standard incandescent lights and will last for more than 50,000 hours. The LEDs also operate at 1 degree above ambient temperature even after hours of operation so they are much safer than incandescent lights.
