Henry Hyde, Former Illinois Congressman, Dies at 83

Henry Hyde, a 32-year-veteran in the House of Representatives and leading voice in the anti-abortion movement, died on Thursday at the age of 83.

 

Hyde represented the 6th District of Illinois from 1975-2007 and was known for his fiery manner in delivering speeches that were often rooted in a historical context. Just one year into his position in the U.S. House of Representatives, Hyde made a name for himself fighting to end federal funding for abortion. In what became known as the Hyde Amendment, the 1976 bill became a watershed moment in the anti-abortion movement.

 

The Republican was also a leading voice in the call for impeachment of then president Bill Clinton. Hyde was then discovered to of had an extramarital affair of his own with a woman who was married with three children.

 

From 1995 to 2001 Hyde chaired the Judiciary Committee and followed that by chairing the House International Relations Committee from 2001 to 2007.

 

In 2007 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
