Explosion at Metals Plant in West Ga. Causes Injuries, Two Schools on Lockdown

An explosion at a metals plant in west Georgia has left several injured and led to two schools being placed on lockdown while emergency crews continue to assess the situation and treat the injured.

 

The injuries caused by the explosion at the G&S Metals plant near Manchester, Ga. are not known at this time but helicopters transported several of the injured to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, about 60 miles away.

 

Officials have been trying to evacuate homes and businesses within a half-mile radius of the plant and have placed two area schools on lockdown.

 

Both Manchester High School and Manchester Middle School were on lockdown despite being several miles from the plant.

 

According to the G&S Metals Web site the company specializes in the buying, selling, processing, and conversion of A356 aluminum scrap and scrap by-products as well as metallurgical services.
