Morrissey, Former Smiths Frontman, to Sue Magazine Over Immigration Story

Former frontman for 1980’s indie rock band The Smiths, Morrissey, is planning to sue the magazine NME after they failed to publish an apology regarding an article that expressed the singer’s alleged views on immigration

In an article published in the U.K. music magazine, Morrissey was heavily criticized for expressing his "beliefs" that immigration has led to a loss of identity in Britain.

The NME quoted Morrissey as saying “Although I don't have anything against people from other countries, the higher the influx into England the more the British identity disappears. So the price is enormous. If you travel to Germany, it's still absolutely Germany. If you travel to Sweden, it still has a Swedish identity. But travel to England and you have no idea where you are.”

Morrissey was allegedly responding to a question regarding whether he would ever move back to London. The 48-year-old singer did a follow-up interview in which he was asked about his comments and he stated there were numerous reasons why he wouldn’t move back to England, chief among them was the cost of living and the media attention.

After the article was published Morrissey’s lawyer labeled the piece “character assassination” and demanded the NME print an apology article. The magazine had a Thursday morning deadline which past without an apology.

Steps are now being taken to file a lawsuit against the magazine as well as the editor, Conor McNicholas.
