Gillian Gibbons Found Guilty, Sentenced to Prison

Gillian Gibbons, the British woman teaching in the Sudan that allowed her class to name the a teddy bear “Mohammed,” was found guilty of inciting religious hatred and sentenced to 15 days in prison and deportation.

Gibbons had organized a teaching lesson about animals and their habitats for her class of 7-year-olds when she selected a teddy bear as the mascot of the project. She then allowed the children to name the bear; the name they selected was “Mohammed.”

Earlier reports suggested that several of the parents who learned about the name of the bear were offended and contacted police but on Wednesday it was revealed that a secretary at the school was the one who notified the police.

While Gibbons maintained that the name was an innocent mistake, the court convicted the 54-year-old who will now serve 11 days in a women’s prison before being deported. Gibbons had been held for four days already since her arrest.
