Gillian Gibbons found guilty of religious hatred in Teddy Bear case

Gillian Gibbons was found guilty of inciting religious hatred in a Sudan court on Thursday after allowing her class of 7-year-olds to name a teddy bear Mohammad. The 54-year-old British teacher was arrested Sunday on charges of blasphemy and insulting religion for letting the students name a stuffed animal after a prophet.

She was sentenced to 15 days in prison. She initially faced a punishment of 40 lashes and up to 6 months in prison. Gibbons’ lawyer said she also faces deportation after her release from jail.

British officials said they were disappointed the charges were not dropped. “We are extremely disappointed that the charges against Gillian Gibbons were not dismissed. As I said this morning, our clear view is that this is an innocent misunderstanding by a dedicated teacher,” said Foreign Secretary David Miliband. “Our priority now is to ensure Ms. Gibbons’ welfare and we will continue to provide consular assistance to her. I have called in the Sudanese Ambassador, Omer Siddiq, this evening to explain the decision and discuss next steps.”
