Jaime Escalante, the Los Angeles math teacher who was the
inspiration behind the 1988 movie Stand and Deliver, has died. Escalante died Tuesday
after a long battle with bladder cancer. He was 79.
Escalante’s push for students at Garfield High School to
learn advanced math and science inspired Stand and Deliver. Oscar nominee
Edward James Olmos portrayed him in the film.
Escalante left Garfield High in 1991 and moved to a
school in Sacramento. He is survived by his wife, two sons and six
grandchildren.
