Hundreds of protesters in Sudan are demanding that Gillian Gibbons be executed after allowing her class of 7-year-olds to name a teddy bear Mohammad. More than 600 Islamic protesters gathered outside the presidential palace Friday carrying ceremonial swords and sticks while chanting, “By soul, by blood, I will fight for the Prophet Mohammad,” “No tolerance: Execution,” and “Kill her kill her by firing squad.”
Gibbons was arrested Sunday on blasphemy charges and initially faced up to 40 lashes and six months in prison. On Thursday the 54-year-old British teacher convicted of insulting religion and sentenced to 11 days in jail.
British officials said they were “disappointed” the charges were not dropped and say Gibbons will be deported at the end of her sentence.
