United Russia Party Expected to Dominate in Parliamentary Elections

President Vladimir Putin is expecting a landslide victory for his party, United Russia, today as Russians head to the polls to elect a new State Duma, a vote that could determine the fate of Putin’s political future.

Without a clear second party grabbing the attention of voters, the United Russia front is likely to dominate the day and possibly position Putin for the role of prime minister following the expiration of his presidential post early next year.

Under the Russian constitution Putin can not seek a third term as president, but he is still seen as his party’s figurehead and would likely take the prime minister role if his party wins in a landslide on Sunday.

While Putin can not run for a third term, if his party takes 66 percent on Sunday his party would have enough seats to rewrite the country’s constitution. That could open the door for a transfer some power to the prime minister post, a position Putin would all the more attractive.
