Afghan President Hamid Karzai Accuses UN Election Officials of Fraud

While Afghan President Hamid Karzai has willingly admitted the country’s recent presidential and provincial elections carried with them widespread fraud the leader opted to point the finger of blame at the United Nations, accusing foreign election observers of organizing the fraud.

Karzai directed the majority of blame at Peter Galbraith, the man who stood as deputy head of the UN’s Afghan mission at the time of the elections. Karzai has said Galbraith attempted to smear his name by giving information to the international media, claims that Galbraith has denied.

In speaking to reporters Karzai said “There was fraud in the presidential and provincial election, with no doubt there was massive fraud.” He then continued, “This wasn't fraud by Afghans but the fraud of foreigners, the fraud of Galbraith, or (head of the EU's observers Philippe) Morillon, and the votes of the Afghan nation were in the control of an embassy.”

Karzai managed to hold on to power following the elections after his opponent in the second round stood down from the race.
