Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has visited the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, one day after a double suicide bombing killed 12 people in the town of Kizlyar near the border with Chechnya. Of the 12 killed nine were police officers
It has been less than a week since two female suicide bombers detonated explosives in Moscow’s subway stations. Those attacks left 39 people dead and several more injured. Claiming responsibility for the attacks was Chechen leader Doku Umarov who said they bombings had been ordered in response to killing of Chechens by federal forces in February.
In response to Monday’s attacks in Moscow President Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin both issued strong statements vowing to destroy those responsible but Wednesday’s second suicide bombing was a sign that Umarov had no plans on hiding.
On Thursday Medvedev met with leaders of the North Caucasus republics and declared “We must deal sharp dagger blows to the terrorists; destroy them and their lairs.” He continued, “The list of measures to fight terrorism must be widened. They must not only be effective but tough, severe and preventative. We need to punish.”
