The two main candidates vying to succeed Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have resigned from their current posts and dedicated themselves full-time to winning the upcoming election.
Lula’s chief of staff, Dilma Rousseff, announced she had stepped down from her position in the current cabinet while Jose Serra, Governor of Sao Paulo, also announced he was stepping down from his political office to dedicate himself to the race.
Both Rousseff and Serra announced their decision on Wednesday, just days ahead of the April 2 deadline to declare their intentions for the October election.
With Lula prevented by law from seeking a third term he firmly endorsed Rousseff who has the backing of the Workers Party. Serra, is the clear leader of the Brazilian Social Democrat Party and is a main political figure as governor of the country’s largest state.
