Gillian Gibbons has been released from the Sudan prison where she has been held the last week. Gibbons was sentenced to 15 days in prison after allowing her class of 7-year-olds to name a teddy bear Mohammed. She was found guilty of insulting religion for allowing the students to name the bear after a prophet. On Friday protesters demanded she be executed.
Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir, granted Gibbons a presidental pardon on Monday. The 54-year-old British teacher apologized for any "distress" her actions caused. "I have great respect for the Islamic religion and would not knowingly offend anyone and I am sorry if I caused any distress," said Gibbons.
Gibbons left on a flight to London and is expected to arrive early Tuesday morning.
