GM Sales Spike in China

Financial World News Update by Equities Magazine

Record breaking sales of General Motors vehicles in China cemented the nation a U.S. auto maker's largest market this year.

230,000 vehicles were sold in China during the month of March, a 68 percent sales gain. U.S. sales reached 189,000 vehicles, a 21 percent that still left domestic sales beneath the Chinese counterpart. In 2009, China was still behind the U.S. with two million vehicles sold against China's 1.83 million. Last year China overtook the U.S. as the number market for vehicles.

For the full first quarter, GM sales in China rose 71 percent reaching 624,000 units. The sharp growth for the start of the year is likely the result of an extremely weak final quarter last year as a result of the financial crisis.
