The NCAA tournament certainly hasn’t disappointed college basketball fans as March Madness produced just that, madness, as several schools like Northern Iowa and St. Mary’s shocked the favorites while schools like Syracuse and Kentucky fell short of expectations. Saturday’s Final Four will end with one #5 seed advancing to the championship game to take on a #1 or a #2 seed, both of whom were expected to fall earlier in the tournament.
In game one the #5 Butler Bulldogs will be taking on the #5 Michigan State Spartans, a team that returns to the Final Four after losing in the championship game one year ago. Butler is making its first Final Four appearance but certainly has momentum on its side with a 24 game win streak, the Bulldogs haven’t lost in 2010.
Many figured the Bulldogs would be upset in the opening round but they took care of UTEP and then Murray State before upsetting the #1 Syracuse Orange and then the #2 Kansas State Wildcats to earn their Final Four ticket. Moving into the championship game will be difficult as they face a resilient Michigan State squad that has overcome injuries to win thrillers in the tournament. Despite being seen as an early exit the Spartans managed to hold off Maryland in their second game with a buzzer-beater, knocked off the Cinderella Northern Iowa Panthers and then edged Tennessee by a point to move into the Final Four.
Game two will pit the #1 Duke Blue Devils against the #2 West Virginia Mountaineers in what promises to be an exciting game. Nearly every expert picked Duke to be the first #1 seed out of the tournament but the Blue Devils have managed to weave their way through some tough games to get one step closer to another championship. The Blue Devils surprised many with their win the Elite Eight against Baylor, showing they could handle more athletic squad. They will need that same performance on Saturday if they are to get past the #2 West Virginia Mountaineers who have been surging late in the year. A Big East tournament title has translated into a solid NCAA tournament where they have scored impressive wins over Washington and Kentucky despite injuries.
