Search crews desperately trying to locate 153 Chinese miners who have been trapped for nearly a week have heard signs of life.
According to reports the crews have said “continuous tapping sound coming up a dredge pipe” indicated that there were still miners alive after the pit flooded earlier this week. While more than 100 people managed to escape the flood last Saturday at least 153 in the Shanxi province mine were unable to escape the water.
Fears of a massive death toll were eased a bit when the rescue crews said they heard the sounds of banging and since that time they have been sending food and water down pipes into the mine to keep the survivors fed.
The sounds were said to have originated about 820 feet below the surface and it is not known if rescuers will even be able to reach the miners who remain trapped. It is believed that the mine flooded after the miners broke through an old shaft filled with water.
China’s mines are the deadliest in the world with thousands killed each year in accidents that could typically be avoided if safety rules were followed.
