Mike Huckabee Grabs Lead in Republican Field

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee has surged past Rudy Giuliani and taken the frontrunner role in a recent national poll detailing the Republican presidential hopefuls.

According to the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Poll, Huckabee now has a 20 percent hold on Republican voters while Giuliani slipped to 17 percent nationally, the lowest percentage of support he has recorded in the poll daily.

The popularity of Huckabee has continued to grow despite criticism from his Republican counterparts who have attacked him for issues ranging from raising taxes as governor to supporting the parole of convicted rapist Wayne Dumond. Shortly after being freed Dumond raped and killed a Missouri woman.

Both Mitt Romney and John McCain hold 13 percent in the latest poll while Fed Thompson has lagged behind, now carrying just 10 percent. Ron Paul recorded a 7 percent show of support in the poll.

Poll numbers for the Rasmussen Report are obtained through an automated phone survey conducted nightly and reported on a four-day rolling basis. The poll is based on 600likely voters with eth margin of error placed at 4 percent.
