Gordon Hayward scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, Shelvin Mack added 14 points and Ronald Nored hit a pair of clutch free-throws with six seconds left in the game to lift the Butler Bulldogs past the Michigan State Spartans 52-50 on Saturday and advance to the NCAA college basketball championship game.
Butler looked to be in control of the game after Willie Veasley gave them a 44-37 advantage on a dunk with 12:17 left but the Bulldogs wouldn’t hit another field goal for nearly eleven minutes. That scoring drought wasn’t catastrophic though as the Spartans could only manage to shave five points off their deficit and climbed to within 48-46 with under two minutes left.
Desperate for a bucket and with just a two-point lead the Bulldogs got a huge boost on an offensive rebound from Shawn Vanzant who then hit a slashing Hayward for a layup and a 50-46 lead with 1:36 left. The Spartans were able to cut the lead to 50-49 with 56 seconds on the clock but after both teams missed jumpers Nored was able to sink his free-throws with six seconds on the clock.
The Spartans had one more shot but the Bulldogs fouled Korie Lucious before he could get a three-point attempt off and after he made his first he intentionally missed the second but Hayward came down with the ball and that sealed the game.
Butler will now face the winner of the Duke Blue Devils and West Virginia Mountaineers game in the NCAA college basketball title game.
