Lansing Township Decorates New Trees with Energy-Efficient LED Christmas Lights

Lansing Township has been busy this year beginning a large scale infrastructure and landscape upgrade in the Eastwood area near Lake Lansing Rd.  Last week the township planted two 25 foot spruce trees in the new roundabouts at the intersections of Wood St. and Sam’s Way and Lake Lansing Rd. and Chamberlin Dr.  Tonight the new trees will be decorated with over 6000 energy-efficient LED Christmas lights.

“The electricity is being installed today and we hope to have the lights up and running by the weekend,” said Steve Hayward, Director of the Eastwood DDA.  The construction of the two roundabouts and planting of the two trees is just the beginning of a larger infrastructure and landscape improvement project which will stretch about ¾ of a mile along the Wood and Lake Lansing Rd. corridors.  The project will include complete landscape installation, ornamental concrete, and possible plazas or other public spaces.  “This is really just the beginning of this project and we want to make sure that the Eastwood area is not only attractive and functional but also environmentally sustainable,” add Hayward.

The LED Christmas lights, purchased from HolidayLEDs.com, a local ecommerce company based in Jackson, Michigan only consume .072 watts of electricity per bulb.  “If the trees are illuminated for 30 days for 24 hours each day it will only cost about $34 to operate the lights,” said Philip C. Curtis co-owner of HolidayLEDs.com.  The highly efficient LED lights will only consume 311 kilowatt hours of electricity during that period.  “It’s really as substantial difference,” added Curtis, “the same 6000 lights would cost the Township over $350 if standard incandescent lights were used.”

In addition to the substantial energy savings, the LED Christmas lights are rated to last for over 200,000 hours.  “We’re confident that the people of Lansing Township will get many years of enjoyment from  these lights,” said Hayward.  “In fact, the lights are so economical to operate we are considering leaving the white lights on year round,” Hayward added.

Shoppers at the Eastwood Towne Center should be able to see the lights in operation this weekend.  LED Christmas lights can be purchased online at www.holidayleds.com.  For more information about the Eastwood DDA please visit www.eastwooddda.org.
