South African President Jacob Zuma Calls for Calm Following Murder of White Supremacist Leader

South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has called for calm in the country following the murder of white supremacist leader Eugene Terreblanche.

According to reports Terreblanche had been inside his house on his farm when at least two disgruntled workers upset over wages entered the home and attacked him. Terreblanche was found in his bed with facial and head injuries caused by a machete and a wooden club.

Two suspects, a 21 and 15-year-old, were arrested and have been charged with Terreblanche’s murder. Shortly after the arrests Zuma cautioned South Africans to remain calm, a call that Terreblanche supporters echoed.

Some opposition leaders have said the murder was political, tying it to inflammatory sentiments spread by a minority of the ruling ANC party. Those accusations have been denied by the ANC who have said there is no evidence to support those claims.

Terreblanche, 69, had campaigned for a separate homeland for whites, insisting that whites could not live under black rule. He headed up the Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB) since 1973 and was a polarizing figure in South African politics.
