Fiji Braces for Cyclone Daman, Three Islands in Path

The northern islands of Fiji are bracing for Cyclone Daman as the Category 4 storm bears down on the island chain producing wind gusts of up to 155 mph and threatening widespread flooding.

Approaching the islands of Vanua Levu, Lau and Lomaiviti, Cyclone Daman has led to warnings being issued to residents imploring they seek shelter in safe buildings. With such strong winds Daman is expected to destroy many of the flimsy homes on the islands.

According to the island’s Meteorological Service residents in low-lying areas should be prepared for potentially deadly flash floods as the storm dumps rain and swells rivers and streams.
