Death Toll from Mine Explosion in China Reaches 105

At least 105 miners have been confirmed dead after the Wednesday blast at the Xinyao coal mine in northern China. Rescue workers have found 15 survivors but the death toll is expected to rise as the workers get deeper inside the mine.

On Friday police arrested 33 managers and officials of the mine after discovering the mining operation was being operated along a coal seam that had not been authorized for production. It was also noted that the managers of the mine failed to notify safety officials for the first five hours after the explosion.

Rather than contact safety experts the managers attempted to conduct their own rescue operation, a move that police believe caused additional deaths.

China’s coal industry has been labeled the deadliest in the world, claiming at least 5,000 miners every year.
