Joran van der Sloot to be released in Natalee Holloway case

Joran van der Sloot has been ordered to be released from an Aruban jail after he was held as a suspect in the 2005 disappearance and most likely death of Natalee Holloway. Sloot and two other suspects, Deepak Kalpoe and Satish Kalpoe, were arrested last month after prosecutors said they had new incriminating evidence against them.

The trio were first arrested in 2005 as they are believe to be the last people to see 18-year-old Holloway on the night she disappeared from Oranjestad, Aruba. They were released as evidence proved to be insufficient.

The Kalpoe brothers and Sloot were rearrested November 21 and held on suspicion of manslaughter, and battery resulting in the death of the Alabama teen. A judge ruled the Kalpoe’s release last week and ordered Sloot’s release Friday.

Prosecutors believed they had new evidence after re-examining existing information.  A judge ruled that the recent investigation did not provide “more direct evidence.”

“He writes that recent investigation has not resulted in more direct evidence than before that Natalee Holloway has died as a result of a violent crime against her or that the suspect has been involved in such a crime,” said chief prosecutor Hans Mos of the judge’s decision.

Holloway’s body has never been found.
