Apple Inc. announced its U.S. Ipad sales on Monday, revealing the company sold more than 300,000 of the new gadget on its first day it was released. Apple did not provide an exact figure, which included presale numbers; however 300,000 was below some estimates.

Tech-junkies waited in line beginning Saturday in order to acquire the new tablet computer that fuzes together the functions of an Amazon Kindle with some of those from the iPhone. Apple made no moves to announce a prediction for first day sales as the iPad endured considerable media scrutiny follows its first reveal.

One analyst predicted first day sales of as much as 700,000 after preorders were higher than expected. Other analysts remained grim in their expectations, noting that unlike a computer or a mobile phone, there is no necessity behind the purchase. Instead, the Ipad is a pricy gadget that many will want but not have a truly practical use for.

Apple revealed that new users downloaded over a million applications and a quarter million books from its online bookstore on the products first day.
