Tiger Woods Press Conference at Augusta Masters Site
4-Time Masters Champion Answers Questions Before 2010 Masters
On Monday afternoon, Tiger Woods answered a number of questions during a press conference at Augusta National Golf Club, where Woods will make his return to golf on April 8 by competing in the 2010 Masters tournament. The press conference was not the first time that Woods spoke since a November car crash sent the media in a frenzy surrounding Woods' personal life and allegations that Woods had been unfaithful to his wife Elin Nordegren. He had delivered his first return speech on February 18th, during which he made a public apology, explained that he would continue undergoing therapy, and said that his return to golf might occur some time this year. That was a prepared speech, and no questions were allowed. Earlier this month, he gave short interviews to ESPN and to the Golf Channel. He answered some questions, but both interviews were limited to a relatively short amount of time. This latest conference was unique because, for the first time since November, Tiger faced a room full of different media sources and fielded a wide variety of questions.
In response to one of the first questions, Woods explained that the hardest thing in the whole ordeal has been really taking a good look at himself and the he and his family having to deal with constant harassment. When asked in what way he will respect the game of golf more, Woods responded that he is going to try to be less exuberant in both negative and positive game situations, and that he will be show more appreciation to his fans, whom he admitted to having neglected. He apologized to the other golfers, who have received plenty of questions regarding Tiger; he hopes the press conference will put an end to that and allow his fellow golfers to focus on the competition. He also answered questions regarding drug use; he said that he has used Ambien and Vicodin but that he has never taken any illegal drug. Many people have been wondering for what exactly Tiger Woods has been undergoing therapy. When asked, he responded that it was to take a hard look at himself; when pressed to be more specific, he replied that it was a personal matter. After Tiger explained that his wife Elin will not be attending the Masters, he was asked if he should be repairing his relationship, to which he replied that he decided to play this week.
Overall, the conference lasted about a half an hour. Woods did answer some new, more intrusive questions, but he also seemed to repeat some of the types of answers that he had given in the 2 interviews he gave earlier this month. Although he answered a number of questions, it seems unlikely that the media will back off too much from Woods' personal life for at least some weeks to come, if not longer. Many people still want to know what exactly led up to that November car crash and what kind of therapy exactly Tiger has been receiving. It seems that, as long as these questions remain unanswered, there will still be a sense of mystery and interest surrounding Tiger Woods and his personal life.
Tiger also said during the conference that he expects to win the Masters. If he does, that will be his 5th Masters victory. Woods is also a 3-time U.S. Open Champion, a 3-time British Open Champion, and a 4-time winner of the PGA Championship.
