South Korean Navy Warship Pursuing Oil Tanker Hijacked by Somali Pirates

A South Korean nay warship is in pursuit of an oil tanker hijacked by Somali pirates, hoping to stop the vessel before it can reach the Somali coast.

 

The Samho Dream, loaded with crude oil, was traveling in the Indian Ocean heading from Iraq to the United States when it was captured by the pirates. The tanker had 24 crew members on board when it was hijacked.

 

The South Korean warships is one of several patrolling Somali waters to combat piracy in the area. Over the past year pirates have made tens of millions of millions of dollars in ransom paymenst for ships they have seized.

 

According to reports the South Korean ship in pursuit of the Samho Dream was ordered to intercept the vessel prior to it entering Somali waters. The ship’s cargo is packed with crude oil said to be worth about $170 million.
