The Boston Red Sox have signed ace pitcher Josh Beckett to a four-year extension worth a reported $68 million, ending any speculation that the 30-year-old pitcher would be looking for another club when his current contract ends at the end of the season.
Beckett was the starting pitcher in the Red Sox opener on Sunday, tossing 4 2/3 innings and giving up five runs to the New York Yankees. The righty didn’t figure in the decision as the Red Sox battled back and won 9-7.
There had been speculation that the Red Sox would be cautious in extending a contract to Beckett due to a history of shoulder issues. That was put to rest on Monday when the Red Sox extended the offer that will pay Beckett an average of $17 million per season without any clauses in the contract that mentions the shoulder issues.
