Nearly 10,000 tons of oil was spilled in the Yellow Sea Friday after a crane punctured holes in the side of Hebei Spirit, an oil tanker. The spill occurred around 7:15 a.m. off the west coast of South Korea.
The Maritime Ministry of Korea said they did not expect very much environmental damage near the west coast of Korea. Actions were immediately taken to contain the oil spill, which is the largest in South Korea history. The flow was stopped by Friday afternoon.
“Because of the current wind and wave movements the maritime ministry is not expecting to see much environmental damage on the west coast of Korea,” said the ministry.
