West Virginia Coal Mine Explosion Leaves at least 25 Dead, Four Still Missing

An underground explosion at a West Virginia coal mine in Upper Big Branch has left at least 25 miners dead while rescue crews continue searching for four miners who remain missing.

Those search efforts have been suspended due to high methane gas levels, a factor that could cause a second explosion.

According to report Monday’s mine explosion occurred as 29 miners were in a vehicle heading out of the mine as part of a shift change. Miners in a vehicle just ahead of the 29 said they felt a blast of air and when they turned around to find out what happened they found several miners dead.

Massey Energy Company, owners of the West Virginia Mine, has said they will push forward with trying to locate the four missing miners as soon as the conditions allow.

The fate of the four missing miners remains grim as officials don’t believe they would have been able to reach an airtight chamber that would have protected them from deadly gases.
