Tsunami Alert Issued Following 7.8 Earthquake Hits Indonesian Island of Sumatra

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has truck the Indonesian island of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami alert for the surrounding region.

The quake’s epicenter was about 127 miles northwest of Sumatra’s coast and while it has triggered a tsunami alert the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center released a statement noting, “A destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.”

Situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is frequently hit by earthquakes and in September a quake left more than 1,000 dead. The extent of damage caused in the most recent quake is not yet known.
