Russian president Vladimir Putin has ended speculation and thrown his support to First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev as his chosen successor when the country takes to the polls on March 2.
With Putin’s popularity remaining high his endorsement of Medvedev almost certainly places the first deputy prime minister in the driver’s seat come elections.
According to the country’s constitution Putin can not run for a third term but he has made it known that he would like to assume a new position within the new government that would allow him special authority.
