Michael Vick Projected Release Date from Prison May to June 2009

Michael Vick, who was sentenced earlier today to 23 months in prison, could serve 18 months inside. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback was charged with dogfighting conspiracy.

The rest of the time will be served through approximately two months in a halfway house. Vick will also get 54 days off on each 12 months served (15% good time per year) and the equal percentage for the remainder 11 months provided Vick receives all of his good time. Inmates are eligible for 54 days per year.

The 27-year old could be back home and able to play prior to the start of the 2009 season.

Vick is not the only NFL player who has timed out his prison sentence. Jamal Lewis, the running back for the Cleveland Browns, timed his sentencing while still with the Baltimore Ravens so he would be eligible to play the 2005 season. Lewis was sent to a federal prison camp in Alabama and served the remainder in a halfway house in Atlanta, Ga.

Vick was sentenced in Virginia, where his crime was committed. If the star quarterback is invited to play for the Falcons, Vick will need to request a change-of-address prior to release. He would then serve his time in a halfway house in Atlanta.

If the Falcons pass on Vick, which is likely, prior to his release date, Vick would apply to his case manager, requesting relocation from his sentencing district to the destination of the NFL team who offers him a job.

In the event the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) does not comply with Vick’s request to go to the city of his choice, Vick would report back to his sentencing district in Virginia to serve his time in a halfway house and report to probation.

In most cases, when an inmate has professional ties to the community, the BOP will submit the request to the probation office in the city that the inmate requests. However, it is to the discretion of the probation department in that district to refuse or accept the inmate. If Vick is refused, he would have only one choice: return to Virginia.

Projected release dates for Federal Inmates are posted on www.bop.gov. Visitors can type in an inmate's name, race, age and sex and receive the projected release date.

The release date given is the date in which the inmate is released from custody. It includes time spent in a halfway house and reports to probation.
