Somali pirates threaten to kill Japanese hostages

Somali pirates have demanded a $1 million ransom for 22 Japanese hostages. Maritime officials say the pirates have threatened to kill the crew members of The Golden Nori if the ransom is not paid.

“Somali pirates holding the Japanese ship are demanded $1 million. They are also saying we are going to kill the crew if their demands are not met,” said Andrew Mwangura of the East Africa Seafarers’ Assistance program.

The Golden Nori was hijacked October 28 while it was anchored 8 nautical miles of the coast of Somali. Crew members radio a distress call and the United States navy ship USS Porter responded to the call but were unable to stop the pirates from maintaining control of Nori.

The chemical tanker was carrying nearly 40,000 tons of benzene, a highly explosive chemical. The navy is continuing to track the hijacked ship.
