South Korean sailors aboard the navy warship that sank off Baengnyeong Island last month have described feeling an “external blast” prior to the ship sinking, lending further evidence that an internal explosion did not cause the disaster that has left at least two dead and 44 still missing.
The Cheonan, carrying 104 crew at the time, had been conducting normal operations when it was destroyed by a massive blast. More than 50 sailors managed to escape the sinking vessel and were pulled to safety by rescue crews.
Immediately following the blast blame was being placed on North Korea yet officials have cautioned against such speculation, saying a thorough investigation was under way to determine the cause.
The search for the missing sailors was called off on Saturday but the ship’s captain has said he still holds out hope.
