Conrad Black Sentenced to 6 ½ Years for Fraud and Obstruction of Justice

Conrad Black, former newspaper magnate and financier, was sentenced to serve 6 ½ years in jail on Monday following his July conviction on charges of fraud and obstruction of justice.

 

The 63-year-old Black heard the ruling inside a Chicago courtroom where Judge Amy St. Eve assured the convicted felon, “No-one is above the law in the United States.”

 

In his July trial Black was found guilty of three counts of mail fraud and one count of obstruction of justice related to his manipulation of shareholders in the Hollinger International newspaper group, which at one time controlled several Canadian dailies, The Chicago Sun-Times, the National Post, the London Telegraph and the Jerusalem Post among other publications.

Black defrauded the group of more than $7 million before resigning as chairman.

 

As part of his conviction he must pay a fine of $125,000 and forfeit $6.1 million. He has 12 weeks to report to the Eglin Air Force Base facility in Florida where he will serve his time in a low-security federal prison.
