Monsanto Company (NYSE:MON) jumped 1.20% to $70.36 after For the most recent quarter, the St. Louis agricultural-products company said it earned $887 million, or $1.60 a share, compared to $1.1 billion, or $1.97 a share, in the year-ago period.

Sales fell to $3.9 billion from $4 billion, primarily as a result of lower prices for the company's glyphosate-based herbicides -- particularly its Roundup brand -- in Brazil, Argentina, Asia, and the U.S.

 

On an adjusted basis, the St. Louis agricultural company said it earned $1.70 a share, matching analysts' mean estimate as provided by FactSet Research.

 

For fiscal 2010, Monsanto projected earnings to come in at the low end of its $3.10 to $3.30-a-share guidance. Wall Street predicted fiscal-year earnings of $3.27 a share.

 

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NYSE:SMG) rose 0.50% to $46.79.

 

FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) surged 0.17% to $63.34 after creating a new 52-week high of $63.49.

 

The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) rose 0.60% to $57.87.
