U.S. Government Authorizes Capture or Killing of Radical Muslim Cleric

The United States government has authorized the capture or killing of a radical Muslim cleric currently residing in Yemen.

Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen, has been linked to the failed Christmas Day bombing of a transatlantic airliner bound for Detroit as well as the mass shooting at the Fort Hood Army base that left 13 people dead. For those acts President Barack Obama and the National Security Council gave approval to the CIA to capture or kill Awlaki.

While the order was made earlier this year it was just made known following a review of national security policy.

Awlaki is considered a threat to the security of the United States as well as its allies and for that reason he has become a direct target of the government. The U.S. could use a number of methods to launch an attack on Awlaki including the use of an unmanned drone.
