The Waning Stigma of Addiction?

Kelly Osbourne and other celebs are finding that it’s less acceptable to be fat in Hollywood than it is to battle an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

The fact that there may be less of a stigma today associated with having battled drug addiction seems like good news for the recovery community, but does that mean there’s greater understanding or just a growing apathy?

Reality star and singer Kelly Osbourne recently told US Weekly, “I took more hell for being fat than I did for being an absolute raging drug addict.”

The 25-year-old former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant has done three stints in treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, but Ozzy and Sharon’s daughter said battling her weight issue was harder. Osbourne recently lost 42 pounds and will have her diet and workout plan featured in US Weekly.

Hollywood’s Treatment of Treatment

Hollywood’s become much more open in recent years about discussing drug addiction, and every week it seems like a new star enters treatment for a drug or alcohol problem. It’s no longer a career killer, and many musicians and actors will even follow up treatment with a “tell all” magazine cover story or book, detailing their problems and how they overcame them.

Let’s hope that this increasingly open dialogue about the disease of addiction helps more addicted individuals to seek treatment and others to avoid illegal substances altogether.
