Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev Refuses to Resign Despite Opposition Uprising

Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has refused to resign from his office as leader of the country despite evidence that the opposition has taken power and now controls the security forces.

Bakiyev is said to be in the south of the country at present and told a Russian radio station he has no plans on leaving. He did however recognize that the opposition, led by ex-foreign minister Roza Otunbayeva, appeared to have control at the moment,

Violent clashes have left at least 75 people dead and more than 1,000 injured and led to Bakiyev fleeing the city of Bishkek on Wednesday for a city in the south.

While refusing to resign Bakiyev did tell the Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy “Even though I am president, I don't have any real levers of power.”

Otunbayeva has said she would not wait for Bakiyev to resign, having already set up an interim government which would remain in power until elections are held in six months. When questioned about Bakiyev at a news conference Otunbayeva simply stated “His business here is over.”
