Martina Navratilova Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

Navratilova to Undergo Radiation Treatment

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with non-invasive breast cancer.  A Hall of Famer who Billie Jean King once called “the greatest singles, doubles, and mixed doubles player who’s ever lived,” Navratilova told People magazine that her prognosis is excellent.

Shocked at the news, Martina Navratilova said that she cried when she received her positive biopsy in February.  On the issue of finding out she had breast cancer after a routine mammogram, Navratilova said, “It was such a shock for me.  It was my 9/11.”  The nine-time Wimbledon women’s tennis singles champion admitted that she procrastinated on getting breast examinations, going four years between mammograms.  Navratilova urges women not to fall behind like she did, as she stays in shape and eats right, and it still happened to her.  Fortunately, her prognosis is looking hopeful, as her doctor and friend said that “It was the best-case scenario you could imagine for detecting breast cancer.”  Navratilova will begin radiation therapy in May.
