Hazardous Gases required Rescue Teams to draw back from the search Thursday, April 08, 2010 for the 4 coal miners that have been missing since the explosion that recently took place at Massey Energy Co, taking the lives of 25 people in what is said to be the worst mining disaster that took place in the United States in over 20 years.
"We think they are in danger and that's the whole intent of evacuating them from the mine," said Kevin Stricklin of the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
The Rescue Teams made it about 1,000 feet from an airtight chamber with an abundance of food, water and oxygen that would last the lost miners numerous days. This is where they hoped the miners might have found shelter. Unfortunately, the Teams did not make it far enough to determine whether or not the lost miners made it to the chamber alive.
